mydeposits Jersey: Minister to remove deposit protection fee from November

Starting from November 1, 2023, tenants in the Government of Jersey’s tenancy deposit scheme, administered by mydeposits Jersey, will no longer be required to pay a protection fee. This fee removal applies to all new tenancies beginning on or after that date.

Additionally, Deputy David Warr, the Minister for Housing and Communities, has agreed to extend the contract with mydeposits Jersey for two more years. The scheme was implemented to ensure that landlords and letting agents protect their tenants’ deposits, giving them confidence that their money is secure and will be returned at the end of the agreement.

Deputy Warr emphasized the importance of landlords fulfilling their legal obligation to protect deposits within 30 days and encouraged concerned tenants to seek assistance from Citizens Advice or the Government’s Environmental and Consumer Protection Housing and Nuisance team.

Eddie Hooker, the CEO of mydeposits, expressed delight in the extension of the scheme and the opportunity to contribute to raising standards in the rental sector.

Mydeposits Jersey will continue to work closely with Citizens Advice Jersey to provide face-to-face advice and guidance to landlords and tenants. Islanders in need of support can contact Citizens Advice Jersey or the Government’s Environmental and Consumer Protection Housing and Nuisance team.
